Civil engineering is an arm of engineering that deals with the design, construction, and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment, including works such as residences, institutional buildings, roads, bridges, canals, dams, airports, sewerage systems, pipelines, and railways. Civil engineering is divided into subfields, such as environmental, geotechnical, structure, water resources, coastal, and construction engineering. The great thing about civil engineering in the real world is that it’s an industry that perpetually adapts to the demands and desires of society. In recent years civil engineering has adapted to consider many contemporary environmental concerns, helping to address issues of pollution and scarce water supplies, while considering the potential of sustainable energy within the industry.
Civil engineers play an extremely important role in the society. They are responsible for maintaining the overall safety of society in a number of ways including rural engineering. From constructing highways and buildings to bridges and tunnels, the responsibilities of civil engineers are many.
Civil engineers are responsible for planning and overseeing different construction efforts and apply civil engineering principles to ensure that the constructed structures are safe and sturdy.
Engineering Careers
Civil engineers conceive, design, build, supervise, operate, construct and maintain infrastructure projects and systems in the public and private sector, including roads, buildings, airports, tunnels, dams, bridges, and systems for water supply and sewage treatment. Many civil engineers work in planning, design, construction, research, and education.
Civil engineers typically do the following:
• Analyze long range plans, survey reports, maps, and other data to plan and design projects
• Consider construction costs, government regulations, potential environmental hazards, and other factors during the planning and risk-analysis stages of a project
• Compile and submit permit applications to local, state, and federal agencies, verifying that projects comply with various regulations
• Oversee and analyze the results of soil testing to determine the adequacy and strength of foundations
• Analyze the results of tests on building materials, such as concrete, wood, asphalt, or steel, for use in particular projects
• Prepare cost estimates for materials, equipment, or labor to determine a project’s economic feasibility
• Use design software to plan and design transportation systems, hydraulic systems, and structures in line with industry and government standards
• Perform or oversee surveying operations to establish building locations, site layouts, reference points, grades, and elevations to guide construction
• Manage the repair, maintenance, and replacement of public and private infrastructure
The Faculty of Civil Engineering as its primary goal seeks to offer and maintain a high quality undergraduate civil engineering education consistent with the present and future needs of a profession serving an increasingly complex technological society.
Key Skills for Civil Engineers
A Civil Engineer must be very social and capable of communicating with others because the Civil Engineering all about is working with people. He has to deal with the community of workers, technicians and engineers of other disciplines, and he has to establish a good relationship with all of these people in order to take the society towards success and progress.
A Civil Engineer is required to have a comprehensive knowledge in mathematics and physics. He should also have physical strength, analytical power, visualization power and adequate accuracy on many issues in order to succeed in this field.
